on the list

At the moment I'm drawing up a list for my must-visit, must-see, must-enjoy places to go in New York, and even before seeing these beautiful pictures on Garance's blog, Mast Brothers Chocolate was on it. I remember seeing it first on kinfolk maybe and feeling a slow smile spread honey-like across my face. This is how chocolate should be, simple and fun and full of life. It reminded me of my favourite chocolate, Mazet, from Montargis in Paris, just good, creamy chocolate flecked through with a bit of something nice, like salted caramel or almonds pralines, or - hark! sour cherry. I know I'm going to love Mast Brothers just from seeing the packaging, and I think these will make the perfect presents for my family back in Sydney - cranberry for my brothers, some kind of toffee/caramel number for mum, and dark dark dark with a hint of coffee for dad.

I'm still working on that list, even as we speak. If anyone has any must-visit cafes, restaurants, bars and shops, or even cute little parks, nice quiet museums and places to rest your weary feet after a day of soaking in the city - let me know! Leave a comment or send me an email, I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Ohh i just found your blog again, i forgot all about you! That chocolate place looks amazing, i love nicely packaged stuff. I'd also love to see your list when you are done, i'm thinking of going back in March!

Best place in NYC (in my opinion): SOHO. Heaven for shoppers, plenty of beautiful independent boutiques as you walk. You must visit :
Love adorned & Tomas Sires.
Really cool shop!

Here's more:

Surely a visit to the just-opened-a-couple-of-days-ago Céline boutique on Madison Ave is in store for you? ;)

I have a million recommendations but a few of my favourites are:

Num Pang Sandwich Shop
21 East 12th St (also 140 East 41st St)
Amazing Cambodian sandwich place, like a Cambodian-American version of bánh mì. Their menus - http://www.numpangnyc.com/index.php/menu - speak for themselves.

Café Grumpy
224 West 20th St
My go-to coffee place if I'm basically anywhere near Chelsea. Very cute little place with coffee that well and truly lives up to exacting Australian standards.

ABC Kitchen
35 East 18th St
http://www.abckitchennyc.com
You could ignore the food here and just sit in awe of the beautiful decor, but luckily the food is pretty impressive as well. They locally source as much as possible, including greens from rooftop gardens around NYC. Kind of cool.

And Mast Brothers Chocolate is indeed very good. The chocolate place in the Chelsea Markets has a good stock of it (I wish I could live in the Chelsea Markets - I think it has basically everything I could ever need).

Rachel Kara - hell yeah!! I'm planning a good day for us in brooklyn on Sunday, you're gonna LOVE it. :)

Hannah - yum yum yum! Thank you so much for your recommendations! I will definitely be williamsburg so traif is on the list as is smile restaurant. and I love the new museum!!

Anon - Don't worry, I definitely will. I'm going to take loads of photos and write it up all good and proper when I come home. Maybe even in separate posts by neighbourhood!! :)

Jessica - HELLO!!! oh man it's been ages!! :))) I'm definitely going to write it all up when I get home, so stay tuned. I love Soho as well, ohhhh and thanks, love adorned has been recommended to me by someone else too, I'm definitely heading there!

Nicole - hehehehehe. what's ur flava?

Jess - OF COURSE!! I will most definitely be there. I'm on the hunt for sunglasses so... :)) haha. Oh Num Pang is on the list already! I love that another person has recommended it to me. That means that it's doubly good. I'm excited, I am hitting it up the second day im in NYC!

I love the sound of the coffee shop. I'm desperate for a flat white so I think I'll be spending inordinate amount of time at the new Toby's Estate in Brooklyn haha. So much for trying new things!

And ABC Kitchen has also been recommended to me, I really want to go there, maybe for the set lunch because it is a little cheaper? I am semi on a bit of a budget haha not that you can tell. We'll see! Thank you so much for your recommendations!! I'm so excited! I can't wait to go to all these places and write up a great list when I get back of all my favourite things in NYC.

No NYC trip is complete without the best burger I have ever tasted at 'The Burger Joint" in Le Parker Meridien hotel. The entrance is hidden behind the black curtain next to the hotel reception.

im so jealous! i got back from nyc 3 weeks ago and it hasn't left my thoughts since.

corner shop cafe in greenwich village http://cornershopcafe.com/ so so so yum, also get something that comes with the garlic fries they were outstanding

also in the west village risotteria http://risotteria.com/ had such yum risotto, definitely lived up to the name, very very tiny though so go at a typically quiet time for a restaurant

you probs already have these on the list but;
-the high line really is amazing
-top of the rock has much better views than empire state
-whole foods at columbus circle is too much fun to be a supermarket- try the whoopie pies
-grand central station is beyond beautiful and the bar there is fantastic too
-upper west side was surprisingly good and zabars had such good produce and cute old people pottering round
-Williamsburg is a bit overrated in terms of coolness i thought but walking the brooklyn bridge is amazing, just make sure you subway over and walk back towards the city for better views
-and most boringly the 7 day unlimited subway past is great value!

have fun!

If you make it out to Williamsburg, you have to go to Blue Bottle (where, incidentally, they sell Mast Brothers), Catbird for jewelry, Beacon's Closet, and Bird. I agree with Traif for brunch, as well as Peter's Since 1969 for brunch or lunch or dinner.

As for Manhattan, B&H Diner in the East Village is amazing. And Murray's Bagels in the West Village.

OK I'm doing food recommendations!
Rosa Mexicana
61 Columbus Avenue (at 62nd Street) - across from Lincoln Center (ONLY go to this location)
http://rosamexicano.com/Locations/tabid/75/Default.aspx
Definitely try this place out - very good Mexican food, if not purist. Beautiful restaurant (you'll love the water wall with the divers), and their pomegranate margaritas are fantastic. Go for dinner and get the guacamole that they make table side for a starter and the filet con hongos for your main. Soo good.

Grimaldi's
19 Old Fulton Street, Brooklyn
http://www.grimaldis.com/
You have to have NY pizza on the trip, right? And if you're going to have it, do it right. Get over the Brooklyn Bridge to Grimaldi's - no reservations and cash only. Might have to wait at peak times but it is soooo good. It's right over the Brooklyn Bridge at its base.

Tinys
http://tinysnyc.com/
Gorgeous restaurant, delicious food and although on the celebrity radar..I've seen Renee Z, Jay Leno and others there..not too fancy pants!x

more food/drink recs! i'll focus on williamsburg/greenpoint, since that's my hood. it may be a hipster haven, but there are still gems to be found!

i second cafe grumpy - the original location is in greenpoint, and their flat white is supposed to be very good!

hotel delmano - fancy cocktails in a library-speakeasy setting

st. anselm - amazing grilled meats, veggies and seafood. the fried mashed potatoes are so good!

the commodore - the best fried chicken in a 70s midwest rec room/tiki/dive bar

nights & weekends - tiny, fun, tropical-leaning cocktail bar from the owners of...

five leaves - great food and people-watching, if you don't mind waiting for a seat

maison premiere - new orleans-themed cocktail and raw bar. absinthe is their specialty, but i go for their outrageous happy hour - $1 oysters (good ones too, not just blue point) from 4-7 weekdays

hope this unseasonably warm weather isn't bringing you down. enjoy!

Enya - another double recommendation le parker meridien is now on my list. thanks for the trip about the entrance. I loved your post!

Miss Sophie - thank you thank you thank you!!

Anon - I love the sound of that cafe, it's definitely on the list, and the risotteria... mmm!! The West Village is a place I haven't really explored that much before so I'm hoping to really get acquainted with it this trip. THank you so much!

Jessie - I will definitely be heading to WIlliamsburg (and have already) so thank you for your tips. Bird and Catbird are, of course, going to be visited... and Blue Bottle sounds wonderful, going to be hitting that up as well. And thanks for the tip for traif, hopefully I can make it happen!
